Want a one-of-a-kind experience this year? Sign up to host a house concert!
House concerts are an intimate night of music the likes of which you can’t get in a big venue. It’s just you, me, 20 of your closest friends, and a special experience you’ll all remember forever! House concerts are free for hosts to put on and easy to set up.
(Love the concept but never heard me before? Listen to my latest album!)
If you have
a living room
a back yard
a garage
a community room in your apartment building
or access to any other space that can hold ~20 people
then you have everything you need to host a house concert! This page has basic info about how hosting works. Read on and apply to host the house concert of your dreams!
How It Works
Even if you’ve never hosted a house concert before, if you have access to a space and some people, you can definitely do this. I promise that it’s easy for first-time hosts, and once you’re in the room with live music and a bunch of your friends, it’s always a wonderful time. I will help you as much or as little as you want to make your show a big success!
The minimum requirements for a host are:
a place where about 20 people can sit together for an hour-long concert (this includes “a yard with blankets” or “pillows on the carpet”)
about 20 folks to sit in that place for that concert
And that’s it!
The Date
Chances are good that your show will take place on a “school night”, since playing as many shows as I can in a week is how I make this tour financially viable! I’m touring in the spring and fall partly to avoid the hottest months of the year but still have opportunities for us to hold concerts outside.
I’ll be planning my route based on where all the potential hosts live and when they’re available, so I’ll try to make sure the timing works for everyone! I’ll do my best to accommodate all the potential hosts. Thank you for being flexible!
The Time
The time commitment for your guests is about two hours (making it very weeknight friendly!), with some time before and after for me to set up and break down my gear. I’ll bring everything I need, so all you have to do is have the space ready! Here’s an example of how the event can go:
5:30 pm: I arrive and set up in your space
6:30 pm: guests arrive
7:30 pm: concert begins
8:30 pm: concert ends
And then we all hang out as much or as little as you like!
FAQ
Q: How much does it cost to host a house concert?
A: These shows are donation-based, meaning it relies entirely on audience donations and merch sales to pay the artist (me!) instead of charging for tickets. This makes house concerts free for hosts to put on. Some hosts choose to provide the artist a guaranteed flat fee instead of asking the audience for donations, which I’m happy to talk with you about if that’s more your style!
Q: Can the concert be longer or shorter than an hour?
A: The recommended timing of a house concert is one hour of music with about an hour of mingling beforehand - long enough to feel like a purposeful gathering, but not so long that it feels like a party instead of a concert. More than an hour of sitting down listening to music can make an audience feel restless, and less than an hour might not feel like their money’s worth! However, depending on the specifics of your situation, we can work together on timing that works best for your particular concert.
Q: Can there be snacks/fancy lights/a raffle/something else at the house concert?
A: Absolutely! All you HAVE to do as a host is invite some friends and open your door for me to come play you a show, but some hosts love event planning and want to put their own spin on the evening! If you have ideas, I would love to hear them.
Q: I want to host but I’m worried I can’t get 20 people to come.
A: A good rule of thumb for getting 20 folks to come to anything is to send out 40 invitations. This is true of personal emails, but especially true of social media invites, where algorithms can easily prevent half your invitees from seeing the invitation anyway! Invite double the people you’d like to attend. Another strategy: try co-hosting the concert with a friend and inviting both your social circles to the show.
Q: Can I host a concert for more than 20 guests?
A: Absolutely! If you happen to have a space that holds a lot more than 20 people, go nuts - the more the merrier!
Q: I don’t know what to write in the invitation/how to tell people about the concert/what to say when the guests arrive.
A: Once you’ve filled out the host form and you and I have started talking about your house concert, I have lots of tips and specific language I can give you about how to get the word out to your guests, how to talk to them about an event they might not be familiar with (this will probably be a lot of folks’ first house concert!), and what your role as host on the night of will look like. You’ve got this!
Q: I have a specific song I’d like you to play. Can I make a request?
A: Absolutely! It would be an honor to play you a request in your own home. Thank you for asking. 💖
